Today Joel and Zybak worked on the dolly, and Phil Kim worked on the mask whittling for the tree people characters in our film. Both look to be coming along epically. More pics of the masks both coming soon as soon as they are both finalized. Here are pics from the day, which included thrifting and hardware store shopping on my, Evan, and Charlie’s end. Then a shot of my mask on me (carved by PK) to finish off the set.
TREEE PEOPLE!

I found a baby praying mantis on Pip’s porch, so we decided to do a shot similar to the one of Phil Kim holding a salamander. Here are both shots: two Phils, with two cool little creatures.

Today was our first shooting day for our upcoming adventure film. We just got a jib shot of Phil’s Jeep driving off into the distance. We had to notify the police department beforehand so we didn’t look suspicious lugging a WMD-looking device and assembling it in the middle of a dirt road.

I finished the camera rig today, with vibration in the 35mm adapter. Thanks go to my dad for doing all the soldering and wire work. Then we got the jib out at duskish and got some shots of that. I’ll refrain from uploading video this time, wait for actual film footage for that, coming soon. Here are some images. Low light sample shot, out of focus. But it’s the only sample I have for depth of field showing off.

Which old jib? The wicked jib. Zybak and Joel finally pieced it together to create an epic monster of a camera crane. Pics of the jib coming soon, but here’s a shotty sample that we shot the night we finished.

Went to Bush Gardens today. We rode all the good coasters, then left and went to Pierce’s BBQ, which was fantastic. Travis, Joel, Charlie, and I all went, and found out USA defeated Spain 2 – nill in the comfederation cup. It was a good day, that’s all I got to say…

The shoot was fun, real chill. We saw a fox, and a dead sea turtle, a young one. We shot near my new house and on the beach, as well as the overpass by the Great: Great Bridge-Bridge. Here are some of the shots. Then on Thursday we shot in downtown Norfolk.
More coming soon, and these are all works in progress.

Recently got Matson Jones, an indie band with cellists and a female vocalist, recommended by Phil Kim. Really digging it so far. I also went to the beach tonight at low tide again and re-confirmed my crab theory: they hunt at night, especially when the tide is low. And then I got a shot of a dead puffer fish on the beach from a while back glowing in the sunlight. Might be too gruesome and mediocre for the gallery, but I thought it was a cool find.

I found this new technique for making more epic looking, harsher high contrast images. I found this Wal-mart cooler one of the migrant workers left after fishing on the rocks by my house to try it on, and I really like the results, but I want to try it with people. “Save money, live better, ‘litter.’” This week I’m shooting with Dennis’s band, Early Departure, and I’ll try it with their individual shots. Should turn out nice. I’m going to work those new reflectors I bought for the film too.

Crabs were everywhere. I decided to take a walk to the beach at this hour because I couldn’t sleep. So I popped an ambien, went to the beach with my iPod and flashlight, and found them everywhere. The sand crabs seem to hunt nocturnally, and they can’t get to their holes in the wet sand of low tide, so I was able to just chase them around spotlit and watch them bury themselves or do whatever they could do to defend themselves. I’m beginning to notice patterns like this at the beach, all based on the time of day and tide. Sometimes when it’s very low and calm, you can find blue crabs, fish, and shrimp colonies hiding in the rocks. The shrimp are very creepy under a flashlight with their glowing pink eyes. Before my next dive trip I want to save up for an underwater housing and flash for my camera, as I find sea life fascinating. This beach walk was relaxing, nice breeze, intense waves from the wind, and calming music courtesy of Beirut as my soundtrack for the evening, or morning, rather. Hopefully I can get some shut eye after all that activity. But until then, I’m going to read Congo until I feel uber tired.
